Romance
From his website:

in Ketrzyn / Poland. He studied at the Warsaw University,
Faculty of Art Pedagogy and graduated from it in 1990.
Took part in Creative Film Workshops OKO in Warsaw

Together

Couple

Now, I might be making a pretty big statement here, but these paintings remind me a lot of impressionist paintings. They have a really powerful quality about them: you have these people and they're interacting with others and the world around them and that interaction is very real feeling. Yet on the other hand, you have this very painterly quality about them along with a very minimalist approach. The minimalism doesn't take away from the emotions that the paintings communicate, however. Which is exactly how minimalism should be executed, in my opinion.

Redhead
Take a moment with me and look at the hair on both of those girls and look at how wonderfully effortless it looks. I want to hang all of these up in a room and just sit and look at them for hours and hours. I want to think about the lives that these people live and the spaces they inhabit.

Shadow

There is a very cinematic quality about Puczel's paintings. They're dramatic, yet understated. They all seem bigger than they actually are. Doesn't it seem like there are novels to be written about the subjects in the paintings? I thought this blurb about him was interesting:

"Jarek is interested in the parallelism of the different realities, which are available simultaneously for certain events. Most often, in one "layer" we have well-known and established experiences, that are outdated or irrelevant to the vibrant life (grayscale on the canvas). The next layer put on them vivid thoughts and feelings that lead to new, more freely actions (symbolized by the colorful elements). It provides the awareness that life can be light and fun."

  1. I wonder what his process is like. It looks like he starts with photos and maybe Photoshop.

I wonder if Socialist Realism still has apparent affects in modern Polish painting. I feel like they're slower to be abstract and prefer to be more literal and representational, or at least that's what I've observed from what little I know about it.
